How to Grow Your Business as a Woman

Being a woman entrepreneur has been an amazing experience filled with both distinct challenges and fulfilling achievements, including tripling my business size over the past decade. My dedication has been key, but the support system around me has played a significant role in this growth. I aspire to offer the same support and encouragement to fellow business owners.

Looking back on my path and achievements, five crucial factors emerge: building and nurturing a strong network, fostering innovation and adaptability, partnering with the right people, tailoring solutions through effective problem-solving, and maintaining a mindset that embraces any challenge.

1 Build and nurture your network

Starting a network may feel intimidating initially, but surrounding yourself with a circle of reliable supporters is invaluable. The saying goes that you become the average of the five people you spend the most time with—so make sure your core group is exceptional. Develop a network that pushes you to grow and broadens your perspectives. Seek out individuals who enhance your skills, those you can mentor, and those who can teach you. Aim for a mix of professionals both within your field and beyond. For instance, including someone from finance in your network can provide valuable insights if you work in retail.

Schedule regular meetings with this group. When the group exceeds six members, meaningful conversations can become difficult, so keep it small and purposeful. Build authentic connections by understanding how each person can support one another’s business growth. Remember, your network will evolve as your business and goals shift. I refer to my networking circles as my “mastermind groups,” which have been essential to my success by providing a space to discuss challenges and celebrate achievements.

2 Stay innovative and open to change

Many companies that failed to adapt have disappeared from the market. Embracing change means being willing to adjust, even when it feels uncomfortable. To maintain innovation in my business, I keep up with emerging trends, collaborate with clients to tackle problems creatively, attend industry events, read extensively, and seek inspiration beyond my own field.

My networking groups also push me to stay informed about upcoming trends and developments. Embracing change has been key to maintaining a competitive edge. In my field, this involves adopting innovations such as motorized draperies and other relevant advancements that meet client expectations. As a woman-owned business, I also emphasize that my work reflects a broader cultural movement toward diversity and inclusion.

3 Choose your business partners thoughtfully

Select your business partners with care, whether they are your accountant, business coach, suppliers, or vendors. Invest time early on to identify which partners align best with your specific business needs. Seek recommendations from your network to help build strong, effective collaborations. Before forming partnerships, clearly define the core values you want your partners to share. Prepare thoughtful questions in advance to interview potential partners thoroughly.

4 Develop tailored solutions and engage in proactive problem-solving

While planning is important, unexpected challenges frequently arise in business that demand flexibility. Every project we undertake is distinct, reflecting the individual needs of our clients. For example, each space where we design draperies and custom upholstery presents unique characteristics—like windows with unusual shapes we haven’t encountered before. We commit ourselves to finding innovative, customized answers for these challenges.

5 Adopt a mindset of limitless possibility

Launching and running a business comes with significant obstacles, and I recognize I can’t handle everything by myself. That’s why I build a strong network of people who empower me to tackle any challenge. Maintaining this optimistic attitude has been crucial. Each year, I’m amazed at how my business expands beyond what I once imagined, a growth driven by my willingness to embrace new opportunities and the belief that I can overcome any hurdle.

Being a woman-owned business allows me to fully engage with my network. Within this supportive and collaborative circle, we openly exchange both challenges and triumphs. We’ve built a genuinely trusting community that I believe is distinctive to women dedicated to uplifting and empowering one another toward success.

Although women-owned businesses remain a minority, they have seen significant growth in recent years, and I’m fortunate to be part of this expanding movement. These five strategies have been instrumental in my path to success. As you develop your business, I encourage you to adopt these approaches and also develop your own, helping to inspire and support other women entrepreneurs.
